Willows Veterinary Centre and Referral Service has appointed a leading diplomate to its growing internal medicine team.

Mark Dunning, who holds a European Diploma in Small Animal Internal Medicine and is an RCVS and EBVS® recognised specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine, joined Solihull-based Willows, which is part of the Linnaeus Group, earlier this month.

As well as being a highly qualified veterinary surgeon who lectures nationally and internationally, multi-talented Mark combines his love of animals with a passion for running and music.

Mark, who speeds through 10k in just 36 minutes with a personal best of one hour 25 minutes for a half-marathon, said: “My passions include barefoot running, trail running, duathlons and triathlons.

“I actually won my first bike race in a triathlon at Blenheim Palace and finished second on the run but, as I swim like a brick, I only managed a top 20 finish.

“I also have seven guitars and love playing them, especially with my four-year-old son Abel, as well as playing and listening to a wide variety of music from heavy rock like Metallica and AC/DC through to folky stuff such as Steve Earle and Chuck Ragan.

“Animals are clearly a major part of my life, both at work and at home. I enjoy keeping marine fish – and the challenge this brings to maintain their environment in optimal conditions – and I have an absolute passion for cats. I’m fascinated by their attitude and approach to life.

“I’m really hoping I get to see some Norwegian Forest cats and some Irish Wolfhounds in my new role at Willows, they’re my absolute favourites.”

Mark, who graduated from Cambridge University in 1997, has a broad interest in internal medicine but particularly enjoys the challenges posed by gastrointestinal, endocrine, haematology and renal medicine.

He has a PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge and after completing his PhD he took a residency in Small Animal Medicine at Cambridge, followed by four years in a private specialist practice in the south of England.

Mark was then appointed Clinical Associate Professor in Small Animal Internal Medicine at the Nottingham Veterinary School, where he was responsible for running the final year medicine rotation along with lecturing to all years of the veterinary course.

He was also in charge of the school’s small animal intern and residency programmes in addition to supervising both undergraduate and post-graduate research students.

The new Willows recruit has also been involved in national and international investigations into canine breed-related diseases such as canine cancer, canine and feline haematology, canine endocrine disease and the development of novel non-invasive biomarkers to help diagnose both simple and complex medical diseases.

On joining Willows, Mark said: “I’m excited to be joining the outstanding team at Willows who deliver such exceptional care to pets and their owners and such an outstanding service to the referring veterinary surgeons.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for me and I’m really looking forward to making my own contribution to their continued success.”
