A veterinary physiotherapist from Cheshire is trekking more than 100km on her wedding anniversary to raise funds for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

Lauren Bate, who works for Linnaeus-owned Northwest Veterinary Specialists in Runcorn, will spend her sixth anniversary weekend walking with husband David from Minehead in Somerset to Dawlish in Devon.

The animal-loving pair are hoping to raise more than £1,200 for WWF, the charity fighting to save endangered species and the environment around the world.

Lauren is a keen supporter but accepts it’s going to be a gruelling weekend (July 24/25) as the pair take a step into the unknown with their long-distance yomp.

Lauren said: “I know it’s not the normal way to celebrate a wedding anniversary but it’s been a miserable 12 months because of Covid, so we desperately wanted to get out and about and do something good for the world after such a challenging year.

“I read about the Coast to Coast walk and just thought it would be the perfect challenge for us, so I mentioned it to David.

“His first reaction was to pull a face but then he agreed and I signed us up for the South West coast to coast challenge, a 102km walk from the Somerset coast to the Devon coast.”

The challenge starts on Saturday, July 24 in Minehead on the south bank of the Bristol channel, before heading across Exmoor, the Exmoor valley, through Exeter and on to Dawlish, arriving on Sunday, July 25.

Lauren admits the pair will be stepping out of their comfort zone in tackling the daunting distance and terrain in such a short space of time but says they’re determined to succeed.

She added: “We do enjoy going out walking and last year visited the Cotswolds where we’d walk 10 to 12 miles a day exploring – but this will be much more demanding.

“We’re looking forward to it, though, and I honestly think it will be good fun.

“I’m just hoping for two things – that it’s not too hot and it’s not chucking it down with rain. That would really make it extra difficult!”

Lauren also explained why they’ve chosen to fund raise for the WWF charity.

She said: “Firstly it’s a charity that’s continually working so hard to help animals around the world, which is something close to my heart.

“WWF is a fantastic charity, a really worthwhile cause working to address some of the world’s biggest challenges, so we’d really appreciate it if people would sponsor us. Every penny can make a difference to the world’s animals and environment.”
