The owner of a rescued Cocker Spaniel left completely blind due to cataracts has told how her “brave” pet is now living life to the full after being a victim of puppy farming.

Seven-year-old Indie was used for dog breeding despite developing severe cataracts in both eyes.  Such was her plight when she had been rescued that surgeons at Linnaeus-owned Gower Vets in Swansea had no choice but to carry out surgery to remove her eyes, after she had also developed glaucoma.

The team at Gower carried out two operations on Indie and have described her as “a really sad case of puppy farming”.

However, despite the loss of her sight, Indie is now thriving with her owner Louise Georgiou, who lives near Swansea and rehomed her two years ago.

Indie now uses a toy doughnut to help her get around as it ensures she doesn’t injure herself if she bumps into things and Louise said her brave pet was loving life.

She said: “Indie is incredible. She is such a brave, happy dog who does not stop wagging her tail and trotting around with her doughnut. She is getting the hang of the layout of the house and is going about like nothing has happened.

“She is also very close with our other rescued cocker spaniel Bella, whom I like to think is her guide dog as they are always together!

“Gower Vets have been amazing and so reassuring throughout, they always give her so much love and cuddles. Indie is still going to have the best life and be spoilt like she deserves.”

Ivana Kossikova, veterinary surgeon at Gower Vets, said: “Our hearts go out to Indie who was exploited by puppy farmers, who continued to breed her despite having cataracts in both eyes. It really is a shocking case.

“However, her recovery has been brilliant and she is doing really well at home with Louise as she continues to get used to her surroundings.

“Indie has now found a loving owner and home, and she will be well looked after in the years ahead. We wish Indie and Louise all the best for the future.”
