One of the country’s leading small animal hospitals has earned prestigious recognition for its eco-friendly practices and sustainability programme.

Linnaeus-owned Wear Referrals, in County Durham, has achieved a coveted Green award from Investors in the Environment (iiE), the highest accolade given by the national accreditation scheme for businesses working to reduce their carbon footprint.

Wear RVN Maren Junior is the hospital’s lead on sustainability and says she’s thrilled by the success, which comes just a year after the award-winning hospital picked up its bronze iiE award and has seen them leapfrog the silver award level completely.

Maren said: “This is a fabulous achievement by everyone at Wear and it’s extremely rewarding to be recognised with such a prestigious award.

“This time last year, we were celebrating earning a bronze award but this year we have made a massive leap forward, skipping the silver level to jump straight to green, the best you can get.”

Maren’s dedication to leading the Wear ‘Green beans’ team, which drives the hospital’s sustainability aims, has earned her praise from parent company Linnaeus with Ellie West, their environmental sustainability lead, giving her a glowing testimonial.

Ellie said: “Maren really has gone above and beyond to spread, share and extend the sustainability programmes at Wear. It has been a pleasure working with her and seeing the results she has achieved.

“It really is incredible news and is thoroughly deserved, so it’s a big ‘well done’ to Maren and the entire team at Wear.

“At Linnaeus, we focus strongly on quality of care and this translates to becoming a sustainable business and upholding our responsibilities to our clients, associates and communities.

“That’s why I am so excited to be leading our ambitious sustainability agenda, which strives to deliver a better future for everyone. I’m thrilled to see another of our Linnaeus partners really achieving excellence.”

There was equally fulsome praise for Wear within the iiE’s accreditation report, which detailed the significant environmental advances made by the multidisciplinary hospital.

It read: “There is clear evidence of a concerted effort by the Green Champion (Maren) and wider hospital to achieve this.

“Overall, carbon emissions are down approximately 15 per cent, including a 40 per cent reduction in electricity use, despite an increase in staff numbers and the installation of additional equipment across the practice.

“Throughout the past year, the hospital has also made great progress in improving its waste management system by educating and informing staff around clinical waste. Notably, recycling has increased 170 per cent.

“Other excellent waste reduction efforts have been introduced, including a huge reduction in the use of incontinence sheets since October 2021.

“Maren is actively engaging with suppliers to reduce waste and looking at reusable alternatives to products such as masks and drapes, having tracked usage alongside cost.

“In addition, there’s been an outstanding number of additional OneHealth projects carried out over the last year, including the creation of a wildlife area outside the practice, tree planting with the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, fundraising and donations for several charities, and discounted services for charitable organisations.”

Wear hospital director Darren Stubbs said: “This is a fantastic achievement by Maren, our ‘green beans’ group and the entire team here, so I’m absolutely delighted to have seen their efforts rewarded with this highest iiE accreditation.

“We take our sustainability responsibilities incredibly seriously and I think this is reflected in the fact that we have been awarded Green accreditation, having only secured our bronze award last year.

“It really has been an incredible team effort and we’re keen to ensure we continue our good work and build upon this recognition moving forward.”
