New President For BEVA

Vicki Nicholls, part of the University of Liverpool’s Veterinary Postgraduate Unit, has been appointed as President of the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) for 2016/17. She takes over the role from Mark Bowen at the end of BEVA Congress 7-10 September 2016. Jonathan Pycock becomes President Elect.
Vicki Nicholls qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 2001 having previously obtained a zoology degree from the University of Leeds. She enjoyed an internship at the Mid Atlantic Equine Hospital in New Jersey before joining the equine team at Bristol University and developing a keen interest in equine dentistry. Following several years in a busy Wiltshire first and second opinion hospital Vicki joined Wright and Morten in Cheshire and also embarked on a mission of post-graduate qualifications. She passed the BEVA/BVDA dental exam in 2010 followed by advanced veterinary practice certificates (cert AVP) in equine medicine and dentistry. Vicki joined BEVA Council in 2010, from which time she has embraced the role of Chair of the Allied Professionals Committee.
During her Presidency Vicki is particularly keen to promote the role of equine vets in the field of equine dentistry. She said: “As a first opinion practitioner working in equine dentistry, I am particularly keen to support the drive to secure legislation concerning paraprofessionals; our role as vets is to safeguard the welfare of horses and it is paramount that this is reiterated in our aim to legitimise and unite paraprofessionals in horse health care.
“In addition, as a working mother I wholly support the need for many equine vets to achieve a better work-life balance. I am proud to be at the helm of BEVA for the launch of MumsVet, a ground-breaking online support network for working parents trying to improve the balance between work and family life.”
