A Look Back On 2017 With Alasdair Hotston Moore MA VetMB CertSAC CertVR CertSAS CertMedEd FRCVS

As we say goodbye to 2017, and hello to 2018 we wanted to take a look back at some of the achievements of one of the groups clinicians who has been with IVC from its inception – Alasdair Hotston Moore.
Back in 2009 Alasdair was employed as Head of Surgical Referrals at Bath Veterinary Referrals. Alasdair flourished in this role and was part of the team in 2011 when the practice was brought together with three others and IVC was launched.
Alasdair’s role within IVC has evolved during the last seven years, remaining as part of the Bath team until recently, but also being a member of IVC Clinical Board from the start. As IVC has grown, Alasdair has always taken part in promoting clinical development within the group, and this resulted in some exciting changes in his activities over the course of the last year!
In early 2017, Alasdair was co-opted into the Learning and Development Team or as it is now known the IVC Academy. Contributing to programmes aimed at recent Graduates, established general practitioners and those developing a particular interest in small animal surgery. Alasdair also provides onsite education to IVC practices, including practical teaching for new graduates, refresher sessions in general surgery and development of keyhole surgery.
This has taken him from Northampton to Inverness and with Northern Ireland and Scotland already booked for 2018, it looks to be another great year of learning within the IVC group! In 2018, he will also be leading the Wound Roadshow for IVC veterinary nurses.
Alasdair was a guest speaker at both of the UK’s national conferences, the BSAVA Annual Scientific Congress and the London Vet Show. Additionally, he spoke at the first UK Wound Extravaganza meeting in Scotland and for the Chongyike School of Advanced Veterinary Studies in Shanghai.
It’s therefore unsurprising that Alasdair’s contribution to the development of the veterinary profession was recognised last year by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, when he was one of the fifty Fellows of the Royal College accepted in 2017.
Finally, at the end of the year, Alasdair became a Group Veterinary Advisor at Independent Vetcare, with a particular role in developing referral services provided by IVC practices.
“It’s been quite a year for me! I was delighted to return to a recognised teaching role in IVC in 2017, given that until 2009 my career had been based at Bristol Vet School. Combining this with referral surgery has been fantastic, and getting out to meet colleagues all over the IVC group has been a pleasure. I relish the idea of developing our referral practices as a group advisor. Unfortunately, that has required a slight reduction in my clinical time and with it a move to another team, at Vale Referrals. Let’s see what adventures my life within IVC will bring in the next 12 months.”
We all very much look forward to seeing what Alasdair has in store for 2018!
