Independent Vetcares Practical Suturing CPD Goes Down A Storm With Post Graduates

Post graduates in their second year of the Independent Vetcare’s New Graduate Academy have been the first to take advantage of Vetoquinol’s advanced approach to wet lab CPD.
Having spent the previous day immersed in neurological lectures delivered by Fabio Stabile DVM, MRCVS, PhD from Animal Health Trust, the Covidien team within Medtronic started the second day’s practical with a 20 minute session on instrument handling techniques, tips and knots, in preparation for the hours of hands-on suturing ahead.
Jamie McClement BVSc CertSAS, RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery, MRCVS at Abington Park Veterinary Group within Independent Vetcare, lead the practical sessions on suturing using a variety of tissues* and suture materials within the Covidien range to demonstrate a broad range of methods and scenarios including enterectomy, enterotomy, gastrotomy, cystotomy, wound closure and chest drain placement.
In a first for Vetoquinol the web lab work being demonstrated by Jamie, was streamed live onto a screen behind him enabling everyone to have a clear, close up view of what he was doing. Delegates were able to then simultaneously copy the techniques exhibited, with Jamie then reviewing, offering advice and guidance on how to improve upon examples in one-to-one tutoring sessions.
The interactive sessions ran from 8.30am – 3pm and despite the intensive training, the mood of the room remained relaxed throughout with questions flowing freely between trainers and students, as well as some memorable sharing of cases.
As well as a wealth of knowledge and experience from the two day event, all attendees left with the brand new Vetoquinol Suture Reference Guide, which were developed in partnership with Alasdair Hotston-Moore MA VetMB CertSAC CertVR CertSAS CertMEd MRCVS, Head of Surgical Referrals at Bath Veterinary Referrals.

It was however, the post graduates who provided the best insight into the two day event with comments such as “I understood more about lesion localisation in the first 15 minutes of Fabio talking than I had done in all my neuro lectures at university!”, “I feel so much more confident now to tackle GI surgery/cystectomies. The guidance and knowledge/experience at our fingertips with Jamie/the rest of the team was fantastic.”
* Please note, all tissue used was ethically sourced by Medtronic from abattoirs as a by-product that would otherwise have been disposed of.
